When the gasket on the original equipment variable valve timing (VVT) spool valve fails on VTEC engines on certain Acura and Honda vehicles, the dealer only offers a complete, costly valve assembly as a replacement. But Honda has acknowledged the bottom half of the factory spool valve usually isn’t necessary to replace, instructing its dealership technicians in one service bulletin to simply dispose of that bottom half of the new assembly when it arrives instead of going through the effort to replace it.
